Norwalk, Conn./WTIC Radio - Three days after a fiery crash closed Interstate 95 in both directions in Norwalk, the highway is now reopened in both directions.
That three-vehicle crash included a tanker truck that burst into flames Thursday morning, burning through the Fairfield Avenue Bridge above.
That span had to come down after it was compromised by the flames.
Crews then worked round-the-clock to remove the bridge, which will eventually be replaced, as well as clear debris and haul away tons of steel and concrete.
The crash and bridge demolition created huge traffic jams not only on I-95 but also on alternate routes along local streets and the Merritt Parkway in particular.
Initially, transportation officials had said the highway would fully reopen on Monday, but that was moved up according a statement Sunday morning by Governor Lamont.
“It is truly amazing that in less than 80 hours from that fiery crash Thursday that shut down traffic in both directions, the highway again is fully open,” Lamont said. “It takes a village, and from the response from local and state police and fire departments to the environmental cleanup by the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection and the demolition and rebuilding by the Connecticut Department of Transportation and contractors, everyone did their part. I am impressed by these efforts and thankful for the dedication, skill, and labor of everyone who has been involved.”
