Old Saybrook, Conn. (WTIC Radio) - A man is dead after Old Saybrook police say the car he was driving was pulled out of the water Saturday night behind the Saybrook Point Inn Resort and Marina.

Officers received the call at 10:12 p.m.
When they arrived on scene, bystanders had already jumped into the water to pull out Mark Wahle, 76, of Old Saybrook.
He was later pronounced dead at Middlesex Medical Center.
Old Saybrook Police Chief Michael Spera said the citizen responders included marina staff and those attending a wedding celebration, one of whom was an off-duty Rehoboth, Massachusetts police officer.
“I commend the brave efforts of the citizen responders who risked their own lives, in attempt to save the life of a complete stranger”, said Spera.
The chief said Wahle was the only occupant of the vehicle.
Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has any information is asked to contact the Old Saybrook Police Department at 860-395-3142.
