Connecticut's "kid governor" for 2021 thinks positivity has gone missing during the pandemic. So, she's hoping to create some of her own and pass it around.
5th grader Reese Naughton of Southington ran on a platform she calls "Be Positive: Pandemic Perseverance."
She'll send positive messages in various formats, including posters, around the state. Included: a Valentine's Day card-writing campaign, with the cards to be sent to nursing home residents.
She's also touting the positive impact of outdoor exercise. She'll hold a contest to determine which 5th grade class can spend the most time outside.
Friday, Reese was inaugurated in a virtual ceremony viewed by her fellow 5th graders from across Connecticut.
In her inaugural address, Kid Governor Naughton said, "Positivity is so important for our mental health... If we persevere through this pandemic together, we can overcome it with positivity. Together, we can get through this."
2020's newly "retired" kid governor is Myra Stanfield of West Hartford, whose platform was "Standing Up for Animals in Need."
