NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTIC Radio) - A New Haven firefighter killed battling an early morning blaze has been identified as Ricardo Torres, Jr.
The fire broke out around 1 a.m. Wednesday in a multi-family home on Valley Street.
Authorities say Torres was killed and another firefighter, Lt. Samod Rankins was critically hurt. They had been trapped on the second floor of the house, according to New Haven Fire Chief John Alston.
"When he was a young boy, he always wanted to be a firefighter," said Mayor Justin Elicker of Torres. "Firefighter Torres is a son, he's a brother, he's a husband, he's a father and he's a hero."
Rankins is in critical condition at Bridgeport Hospital.
Two residents were rescued.
