Rocky Hill, Conn./WTIC Radio - The state inspector general has released a report on an officer involved shooting last year in Middletown.

The investigation concludes that Middletown police detective Karli Travis was justified in shooting Winston Tate on the morning of August 12th, 2023.

The incident unfolded around 6:30 that morning on a report of a man breaking glass and screaming incoherently outside a Liberty Street home.

When Travis and other officers approached, they were met by Tate, who closed in swinging the hammer wildly.

The report says Travis fired, hitting Tate in the hand, shoulder and elbow.

Tate was treated at a nearby hospital, as was Travis.

The IG's report says Travis was justified in using deadly force because she believed the weapon wielded by Tate could have caused significant injury.
