Sprague, Conn ./WTIC Radio - State Police say a mother and her daughter died after they were swept away while swimming in the Shetucket River in Sprague on Tuesday.

Troopers received the call just before 5:30 p.m. to the Park Drive area of the river.

They say Kelly Dora, 39, of Norwich and five-year-old Aralye McKeever were located by rescue crews who provided initial life-saving measures.

Both were rushed to Backus Hospital where Dora was later pronounced dead.

McKeever was transported to Connecticut Children's in Hartford where she died.

Officials with the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection are advising residents to be mindful that the recent heavy rains have created dangerous conditions on waterways and to use caution or avoid them altogether until water levels drop and current begin to ease.
