Eviction leads to killing of civil process server, police officer in Independence, MO

KANSAS CITY – An eviction at a house in eastern Independence on Thursday afternoon resulted in a civil process server and an Independence, Missouri police officer being shot and killed, and the wounding of two other police officers, according to Independence Police Chief Adam Dustman.

Chief Dustman identified Cody Allen, 35, as the veteran police officer who died in the line of duty. The 16th Judicial Circuit Court identified the process server as Drexel Mack, a 12 year employee of the Jackson County court system.

Chief Dustman said during a late afternoon news conference the two wounded officers are expected to recover.

One suspect, a man believed to be in his upper 60s, was taken into into custody and taken to a hospital with minor injuries, according to a Missouri State Highway Patrol spokesperson.

According to multiple authorities, this occurred after 1:00pm on Thursday.
Mack, along with another process server, had gone to the house on N. Elsea Smith Road in rural eastern Independence to serve an eviction notice. Mack was then shot.
Independence police officers responded, resulting in the shooting death of Officer Allen, and the wounding of two others.

The house is near the intersection of East Bundschu Rd. and N. Elsea Smith Rd. The neighborhood is north of the Lake City Ammunition Plant and near 24 Highway and Twyman Rd.

Ft. Osage High School is nearly three miles from the scene, it was placed on lockdown for a short time only as a precaution.
