APRIL 2026 MISSOURI VOTER GUIDE
This April 7th municipal election will have vast consequences for taxpayers. In most local counties except St. Louis County and City, voters have a chance to effectively freeze their property tax. In almost every fire district, and many cities, they are asking for a ½ to 1% sales tax increase out of fear that property taxes will be frozen. In counties where the freeze fails, you could see both taxes go up.
THIS IS NOT A COMPREHENSIVE LIST. There are dozens and dozens of municipal offices on the ballot. I cannot list them all, so I will not list any of them. I will hit the School Board races we can impact, and the property tax and sales tax issues. Driving voter turnout will be the key. Please vote, and encourage friends and neighbors of the importance of these issues. A very small percentage of voters will determine your taxes if you do not get out and vote in numbers.

PROPERTY TAX FREEZE ISSUES: VOTE YES, IN EVERY CASE.
This is important: EVERY COUNTY HAS A DIFFERENT NAME for their proposition.
I will list many of them, but the wording should help you figure it out. It is almost identical in each proposition. This is Prop RT in St. Charles County:
“Shall the County of St. Charles, consistent with RSMo § 137.1120, implement a tax credit program whereby the effective real property tax liability on an eligible taxpayer's homestead shall not be increased above the liability incurred during the initial credit year, pursuant to the language of the enabling statute?”
These measures would freeze the property tax on a primary residence at the 2024 tax year level. Taxes could increase only if voters approve a property tax rate hike or if there is an increase in value because of new construction or renovations. **This marks the greatest opportunity to control your taxes since the Hancock Amendment.** It protects homeowners from unreasonable reassessment without a vote, as we saw last year. As Ron Swanson pointed out so eloquently “always remember, the government is a greedy piglet, suckling at a taxpayer’s teat until they have sore, chapped nipples.” Opponents (bureaucrats and Union leaders) say schools, fire districts, and other agencies would eventually lose money as property tax revenue stagnates. Another way to look at that is instead of getting a guaranteed increase with each reassessment, these entities will need to ask the voters and justify that tax increase they seek. Again, I am a YES on each of these county propositions.

FIRE AND EMS SALES TAX INCREASES: NO
To my First Responder friends, I get it. You want voters to approve an additional 1% sales tax now, just in case property taxes get frozen. Clearly there is “strategery” here, as W might say, because just about every fire district is asking for this using the exact same language. But for now this is a tax increase that is not necessary in many cases, because it’s not clear property tax freezes will pass. Promises of a “reduction by 1/2 of the current property tax levy” if this passes is not reassuring, because it’s still an extra 1% on purchases district-wide, and if Missouri income tax goes away many other sales taxes are going up as well.
Here is the language you will see on most ballots, but obviously the District name will be different. I am a NO:
Shall the (name) Fire Protection District impose a sales tax of one percent for the purpose of providing revenues for the operation of the (name) Fire Protection District and the total property tax levy on properties in the Fire Protection District shall be reduced annually by an amount which reduces property tax revenues by an amount equal to fifty percent of the previous year's revenue collected from this sales tax?
SCHOOL BOARD RACES:
The dark forces who want to brainwash your kids are back with a vengeance. Just four years ago, we surprised the establishment and elected a number of student-focused board members who still fight to protect our kids from pornography on shelves and woke curriculum. But the Missouri NEA and leftists like Ted House and his PAC have thrown gobs of money and lies at our candidates, and with some success. That makes key races so important this year. Any candidate endorsed by or backed by the NEA also supports every radical idea pushed on our children. Don’t believe me? Read their agenda here.
We must return common sense to our school boards, because most superintendents and administrators back the woke causes hurting and distracting our kids from learning critical thinking and basic education in our schools. Rainbow flags and political activism have no place in our classrooms.

If your district is not listed, run for office. These are districts where we have the opportunity to add candidates who reflect common-sense values and are not NEA-owned candidates.
