Approximately half of the inmates in Illinois to be released under new SAFE-T Act

Madison County State’s Attorney Tom Hain joined the Mark Reardon Show to discuss the new “SAFE-T Act” signed into law by Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker and set to take effect in January 2023.

On January 1, Illinois inmates will suddenly become subject to the SAFE-T Act, allowing approximately half of them to be released “without paying a dime” because the crimes they were charged with are no longer detainable offenses, according to Hain.

Hain goes on to list inherently non-detainable crimes, including, “hate crimes, aggravated DUIs – including DUIs where innocent victims are dead or permanently disfigured – aggravated fleeing, vehicular homicide, even threatening a public official.”
