Authorities in Pickens County, S.C., confirmed Thursday that a five-year-old boy died after he fell from a vehicle on Grant Valley Road.

An investigation into the incident was ongoing as of Thursday afternoon, law enforcement told Audacy.

Previously, News Talk 98.9 Word reported that the boy was identified as Axel Garcia and that the car he fell from was a Chevy Malibu. The report said that Garcia was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities are investigating if a vehicle struck the boy after he fell.

According to an obituary posted by Thomas McAfee Funeral Home - Northwest Chapel, Garcia was “a vibrant and joyful” kindergarten student at Concrete Primary in Easley, S.C. He is survived by his parents, other family members and a pet dog.

Statistics from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention updated in 2020 show that more than 600 children age 12 and younger died in motor vehicle accidents that year. There have also been other cases of people falling out of cars.

CBS News reported late last year that a person was critically injured after falling from a vehicle in Morton Grove, Il. Last April, a 2-year-old girl died when she fell from a vehicle in Everett, Wash., according to KIRO 7.
