Apple Maps has joined its digital map competitors, officially renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America after the Trump administration updated the United States database for geographic names.
This week, the U.S. Geographic Names Information System officially updated the name of the body of water. In response, Apple Maps, Google Maps, and Bing Maps have all renamed it to the Gulf of America on their respective platforms.
Google said on Monday that it was changing the name to stay “consistent with our longstanding practices.”
Microsoft, the owner of Bing Maps, shared that it made the change “in accordance with established product policies.”
“We are committed to providing users with accurate and up-to-date information,” a Microsoft spokesperson said of the change.
Apple has yet to comment on the name change.
While all three companies have moved to change the name on their digital maps, it won’t be the same around the world.
On Google Maps, for example, the name of the gulf will depend on where the user is located. Users in the states will see the body of water named the Gulf of America, while users in Mexico will see it as the Gulf of Mexico.
Those who are outside the U.S. and Mexico will see both names written as “Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America).”
The Department of Interior renamed the body of water following an executive order from Trump on his first day in office. Days after the order, the department said in a press release that “the Gulf of Mexico will now officially be known as the Gulf of America.”
The decision to rename the body of water has received criticism, most notably from Mexico’s president, Claudia Sheinbaum. According to a report from Al Jazeera, Sheinbaum wrote a letter to Google, questioning the change.
“To change the name of an international sea, it is not a country that changes it. It is an international organization that does this,” she said at a press conference.
