The 2024 Presidential election is already set to be a historic race with Republican frontrunner and former President Donald Trump facing multiple criminal indictments as he bids for a return to the White House.

Now a family member of the current President, the man who defeated Trump in 2020, is facing his own legal trouble as the run-up to the 2024 race continues.

The Department of Justice will seek an indictment by September 29 of Hunter Biden, son of President Joe Biden, in an ongoing case involving tax and firearms violations, according to a Wednesday court filing.

September 29 is the deadline for indicting Biden under the Speedy Trial Act. “The government intends to seek the return of an indictment in this case before that date,” U.S. Special Counsel David Weiss wrote in a status report to U.S. District Judge Maryellen Noreika.

Noreika has already rejected a plea deal by Biden back in July, paving the way for the case to head to trial. Noreika was concerned over the deal’s legality and the broad amount of immunity Biden would have enjoyed under it.

“We expect a fair resolution of the sprawling, 5-year investigation into Mr. Biden that was based on the evidence and the law, not outside political pressure, and we’ll do what is necessary on behalf of Mr. Biden to achieve that,” Biden’s attorney Abbe Lowell said, according to Reuters.
