Former Vice President Mike Pence is drawing backlash on social media after a clip from his Tuesday night interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity went viral.

Pence was trying to convey the seriousness of the threat he believes is posed by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, saying, “If you think he’s going to stop, if he captures Ukraine, in re-establishing the old Soviet sphere, you’ve got another thing coming.”

But Pence is also receiving pushback after making certain claims about speaking harsh truths to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“I’ve stood closer than I am to you and looked Vladimir Putin right in the eye and told him things he didn’t want to hear,” Pence said during the interview.

One tweet sharing the clip has over 1.5 million views, and the video contained within has been watched over half a million times.

And people certainly have opinions.

“There are many things Mike Pence has never done in his life,” tweeted political commentator Brian Normoyle. “Chief among them is look Vladimir Putin in the eye and tell him anything of consequences, let alone things he didn't want to hear. What a weird lie to tell.”

Members of the general public were also skeptical, with one Twitter user tweeting, “Of all the things that never happened, this never happened the most.”

Pence has yet to offer further comment on the claims.
