Milwaukee police have arrested a 27-year-old man in connection to a shooting last week that left a 1-year-old girl dead after an argument broke out between two adults.
Police shared that the child, identified by the Milwaukee Medical Examiner’s office as Zy-Aire Danielle Nevels, was shot while riding in a car during the argument.
After the shooting, she was brought to Station 36 of the Milwaukee Fire Department for assistance. From the station, she was taken to a local hospital, where she died from the injuries she sustained during the shooting.
Police shared that the family of the girl knew the suspect and that criminal charges are being referred to the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s office.
Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson spoke about the shooting, which also coincided with the start of Gun Violence Awareness Month.
“I’ve been just incredulous that a one-year-old was shot and killed because of some idiot out there with a gun firing into a vehicle. Unacceptable,” Johnson said. “[This] brings to the forefront that we need to focus in on these efforts of anti-violence and encourage people to put guns down. It’s a simple premise, put guns down. Nothing good comes when you fire off a gun.”
The investigation into the shooting remains ongoing at this point.
