A Houston woman who was eight months pregnant was shot to death over the weekend -- just one day before her baby shower was scheduled to be held.

Jennifer Hernandez, 20, was found Friday in the passenger seat of her boyfriend's car, which was riddled with bullet holes along a street in North Houston, according to the Harris County Sheriff's Office.

Hernandez was shot in the head and neck, police said. She was taken to the hospital where she was pronounced dead. Her unborn child did not survive.

Hernandez's 17-year-old boyfriend, who was sitting in the driver's seat, was shot twice and taken to the hospital in stable condition.

According to police, the couple had just left a nearby Shell gas station when a white sedan with tinted windows and a paper license plate sped up beside them and fired multiple shots into their vehicle.

"According to the driver, he said there was no interaction before that," Sgt. Ben Beall told KABC-TV. "They did stop at the gas station just west of us here and he said he has no idea where the vehicle came from. It just came out of nowhere started shooting at him."

Rick, who was in the area, ran to help and called 911.

"She was on the phone with her mom and kept saying, 'I'm not going to make it, Mom,'" Rick told KABC. "Her mom kept saying, 'Where are you, where are you?' I told her the area we were at and the cross street. I said, 'This is where we are. Get here because I don't think she's going to make it. She's telling you she's not going to make it. I am pretty sure she's not going to make it.'"

The suspect fled the scene after the shooting and remains at large.

The shooting happened the day before Hernandez was set to have a baby shower celebrating the arrival of her son, KABC-TV reported.

GoFundMe page seeking help with funeral expenses for Hernandez describes her as a "wonderful daughter, a wonderful sister" who "would have been a wonderful mother."
