It’s graduation time, and this year a 12-year-old boy from Romeoville stood out as he crossed the stage to receive his diploma.
Beny Bamburac did not graduate early from elementary school last week, or from high school. He received his associate’s degree in Internet Technology from Joliet Junior College Friday.
In a Joliet Junior College press release from October 2021, it was reported that Beny’s parents had him watching DVDs on how to read when he was 5 months old. At 8 months, Beny was fluent.
“I really liked learning from that, and then explaining everything to my family and anybody else who would listen to me,” Beny was quoted as saying in the release.
At age 9, Beny — who was finishing sixth grade — had completed math through high school. School officials said that’s when he decided to enroll at Joliet Junior College, which he was eligible to do based on his math placement test score.
According to the Joliet Herald-News, the preteen finished his associate’s degree in December and is currently enrolled at Lewis University.
A retiring Joliet Junior College department chair praised the boy’s parents because they are not pushing him. He’s pushing himself to learn more.
