Zack Smith, a Heritage Scholar, joins The Mark Reardon Show to discuss today's arguments before the Supreme Court on a Colorado case involving business owners and gay rights.
“I think this is really a continuation of that previous case with Jack Phillips. The cake baker, the court, in that case, did decide in Jack Phillip's favor, but they did some very narrow grounds and they didn't reach the real core issue in that case whether or not his being compelled colorado's attempt to compel him to make cakes for same-sex weddings would violate his First Amendment rights,” explained Smith
He continued, “Laurie Smith, as you mentioned, she's a website designer in Colorado and under Colorado's interpretation of its anti-discrimination statutes. She would essentially be compelled to create websites, wedding websites for same-sex couples, which she says would violate her core religious beliefs. And more importantly, for purposes of this case, would violate her First Amendment rights not to be compelled to speak in support of something she disagrees with.”
