Holidays parties with coworkers are full of high spirits, good food and an abundance of alcohol, all of which can make you memorable for the wrong reasons, etiquette experts warn.
Danielle Kovachevich with the Detroit Academy of Etiquette joins WWJ's Erin Vee to go over the dos and don'ts of your next office party — so you won’t have to regret showing your face at work the next day.
"This is such a hot topic, you know, not just during the holiday season, but really all the time, especially in business," Kovachevich said. "A lot of times people show up at these parties and there's top shelf alcohol and good food. People think it's a free for all."
Kovachevich reminds her clients that it's not about the food or the alcohol, but rather relationships and connections. While it's very easy to get caught up in all the fun, you can make decisions that go wrong.
"People are so excited to be out and about and I get that and it is a wonderful thing, but you have to remember to maintain your professionalism and not get caught up in the moment because, people don't forget those things that go down at the holiday party," she warned.
Kovachevich advises the following tips to win over your next holiday work function:
• Err on the side of professionalism
• At all costs, avoid flirting
• Limit your drinks to two drinks
• Be cognizant of your body language
• Have fun with your outfit, but keep it professional
• The holiday party is not the time or place to talk about business
• If your superior brings it up, go with the flow
• You should never come empty-handed
• Thank those in charge of the event
