Trump has returned to Musk’s remodeled Twitter – what does it mean?

After more than two years, former President Donald Trump made his first tweet on X, the social media site formerly known as Twitter. He posted his mugshot from Fulton County, Ga.

This photo post also included “ELECTION INTERFERENCE! NEVER SURRENDER!” at the bottom.

Trump was booked there Thursday on charges filed by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis. He and 18 other defendants face RICO charges related to election interference allegations.

Back in January 2021, Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey banned Trump from the site following the deadly Capitol riot. Then, Elon Musk restored the former president’s account last November after the billionaire and Tesla CEO purchased the site.

By that time, Trump had already worked to develop Truth Social, his own social media platform. While he posts there frequently, he’s all but ignored Twitter (now X) for months.

Musk seemed pleased with the former president’s return.

“Approximately 10 million views per hour of this image,” he said in a comment on the post. In a re-post, he also said: “Next-level.”

Does the post indicate Trump is planning to return to X more often? Compared to 6.39 million followers on Truth Social, Trump has more than 87 million on Twitter.

Musk has made controversial changes to the platform since taking over, including changing the verification process and reinstating other suspended accounts. He calls himself a “free speech absolutist,” per The Guardian.

Trump has also said that he believes the site is in “sane hands” with Musk at the helm.

However, Musk has hosted a live event with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who is running against Trump to be the GOP’s 2024 presidential candidate. Tucker Carlson started up a show on the site after a messy breakup with Fox News and he had Trump on Tuesday, as the party’s frontrunner ditched its first official debate.

As of Saturday evening, Trump has not made any follow-up posts to the mugshot – which also directed people to his website, where they can send monetary donations. By that time, he had posted many times on Truth Social. These included posts about the Georgia case, as well as the other indictments he has faced so far this year.

Indeed, it seems like there are reasons for Trump to avoid posting on X in the future, despite his significant following there.

“Shares of Digital World Acquisition Corp (DWAC.O), which has agreed to merge with Donald Trump's media company, fell about 4% on Friday after the former U.S. president returned to social media platform X,” Reuters reported Friday.
