Former President Donald Trump is considering skipping Republican National Committee debates leading up to the 2024 presidential election, he said in a Tuesday Truth Social post.

“I see that everybody is talking about the Republican Debates, but nobody got my approval, or the approval of the Trump Campaign, before announcing them,” said the post.

RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel announced initial information about the first GOP debate in a letter sent to committee members, The New York Times reported in February. She then announced April 12 in an interview with Fox News that the first debate would be held in Milwaukee this August and that the committee would partner with Fox for the debate.

According to the Associated Press, “the committee is considering between 10 and 12 debates between August and its national convention in the summer of 2024,” and POLITICO reported last week that McDaniel announced the second RNC presidential primary debate will be held at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, Calif.

“When you’re leading by seemingly insurmountable numbers, and you have hostile Networks with angry, TRUMP & MAGA hating anchors asking the ‘questions,’ why subject yourself to being libeled and abused?” Trump continued in his Tuesday post. “Also, the Second Debate is being held at the Reagan Library, the Chairman of which is, amazingly, Fred Ryan, Publisher of The Washington Post. NO!”

Recent polls – including Wall Street Journal poll results released this month and NBC News poll results released Sunday – show that Trump is still leading the current pack of potential GOP candidates despite his legal troubles. Other contenders include declared candidate Nikki Haley and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who had not officially announced his candidacy as of Wednesday.

On the Democrats’ side, President Joe Biden officially announced he would run for a second term this week. NBC poll results showed that most Americans don’t want Trump, 76, or Biden, 80, to run in 2024. However, 41% said they would vote for Biden and 47% said they would vote for the eventual GOP nominee. As of Tuesday, the race “looks close,” per The New York Times.
