A couple from Grand Haven were charged with child abuse after they were found unresponsive from suspected drug use in vehicle with their 4-month-old child freezing in the backseat last month.

According to the Grand Haven Police Department, Philip James Nass III, 32, and Crystal Maria Kanouse, 30, were arrested and charged this week for their alleged involvement in the incident back on Jan. 29.

Police said a concerned citizen called 911 after seeing the couple passed out in the front seat of their vehicle, which they had pulled over on a side street in Grand Haven.

The car was not running and an infant boy was in the backseat unsecured in an infant carrier, the caller told police. The baby did not have winter clothing or socks on and no blanket could be seen.

By the time officers arrived at the scene, the baby's condition had worsened. Officers noted the baby was cold to the touch and his feet had turned blue.

The infant was immediately taken to a local hospital for further medical care. He has since recovered, police said.

Investigators believe drugs were involved in the incident.

“We are grateful for the person that stopped and called 911,” Director of Public Safety Jeff Hawke said, “The baby very likely would have died had he remained in the car.”
