The Republican referred to San Francisco a "dumpster fire" in a video posted to Twitter by The Recount, the latest in DeSantis' escalating attacks on California following Gov. Gavin Newsom's criticism of Florida's controversial "Don't Say Gay" bill.

The remarks came as DeSantis was explaining the impact of California businesses moving to Austin, Texas.

"The leftism…they will not draw the connection between their leftist ideology and the destruction that's all around them," DeSantis said to laughs. "It is a problem. I do think there's a class of voters who would come to Florida and they would continue to vote the same way."

Newsom – who's used a growing national profile and social media savvy to go after Republican policies in the past – blasted Florida's "fiscal responsibility" and "business-friendly climate" on Twitter last week after it was revealed Floridians, not Disney, could foot the bill for additional property taxes as legislators go after the company.

Newsom also called the move against Disney "authoritarian."

It's not the first time the two governors have traded barbs.

Both previously used the others' state as examples of poor policy multiple times during the height of the coronavirus pandemic to show evidence their own policies were working.
