Some workers in the state of Missouri were overpaid on their unemployment benefits. More than 45,000 people collected benefits that they were not supposed to receive, making it $150 million total in an overpayment.
This was no fault or mistake of their own. The Missouri government messed up the payments and now wants those recipients to pay it back. Lawmakers have been debating how to handle this on the floor since the incident came to light. In one hand, you have taxpayer dollars being mishandled and misplaced and funding things the people of Missouri didn't sign up for. On the other hand, this was no one's fault but the governments and in the middle of a pandemic, should we put pressure on those who have already lost so much and expect them to pay up?
State Representative Raychel Proudie called into the show to discuss the bipartisan leadership taking place over this debate.
"We are all pretty much on one accord on this. There is no party lines," she said.
