After bringing back starting pitcher Jack Flaherty, the Tigers are still aiming to upgrade their roster.

Could they be eyeing a specific position player? A certain third baseman? Say, Alex Bregman?

Asked Friday if the Tigers are still seeking a bat, Scott Harris smiled and gave what he called the "evergreen answer."

"We’re always looking to make our team better. There’s still a lot of free agents out there and there’s still a lot of trade conversations. So, I don’t know if we’re definitely going to be able to add, but we’re looking to add," he said.

The Tigers have been linked to Bregman since the start of the winter, even more so recently. The club has a need for an everyday third baseman and a right-handed bat for the middle of the lineup, and Bregman fits the bill. He played for A.J. Hinch in Houston and remains a free agent.

Bregman, who turns 31 in March, is seeking a long-term deal worth in the neighborhood of $200 million after turning down a six-year, $156 million offer to stay with the Astros, but his market is shrinking as spring training nears. The Tigers, Red Sox and Blue Jays are among the teams in the mix for his services, along with the Astros.

Reports after the Flaherty signing were that the Tigers remained in pursuit of Bregman. He's not the only player on their radar, but it's hard to imagine any available player who would make a bigger impact on their team in 2025 and beyond.
