Dak Prescott injury: Jerry Jones says Cowboys 'likely' to place QB on IR

Nothing is official until it’s official, but Jerry Jones is laying the groundwork for Dak Prescott to miss at least four games.

The Dallas Cowboys quarterback exited Sunday’s 27-21 loss to the Atlanta Falcons with a right hamstring injury. Multiple reports Monday indicated that Prescott could miss multiple weeks, but head coach Mike McCarthy would only go as far as ruling him out for Sunday against the Eagles.

However, the Cowboys owner and GM said Tuesday in his weekly appearance on Shan & RJ that a trip to injured reserve is likely for Prescott.

“Well, it’s iffy but it’s an extended period of time here," Jones responded when asked about a rough time frame for Prescott to be out. "I wouldn’t dare make a prediction when it could be, but it’s likely we’ll IR him and we’ll see how his rehab goes."

Players who get placed on IR must miss a minimum of four games. After that, their team can open up a 21-day practice window when they’re ready to ramp the player up, and they must be activated within those three weeks.

With Prescott out, the Cowboys presumably will turn to Cooper Rush, who has taken over plenty for Dallas when Prescott has gotten hurt and replaced him Sunday.

Trey Lance is the Cowboys’ other option, and Jones didn’t altogether dismiss the possibility of him seeing time while Prescott is on the shelf. The 2021 No. 3 overall pick has yet to find his footing in the NFL, but offers more upside and a potential future in Dallas than Rush.

EVP Stephen Jones also hesitated to commit to Rush when asked Monday on the K&C Masterpiece.
