Joe Mixon is the Texans' newest running back a day after NFL free agency officially began.

Except they are not simply signing Mixon. It's a trade to bring in the running back who the Cincinnati Bengals intended to cut. Those were the reports from late Monday, as Mixon became the Texans' top target, according to SI.com's Coty Davis.

Instead of allowing Mixon to hit the open market, where the Texans did not exactly have success Monday, they agreed to a trade with Cincinnati to ensure Mixon's services.

The move comes on the heels of the Texans missing out on Saquon Barkley, who signed a three-year, $37.75 million deal with the Philadelphia Eagles, and Houston's own free agent running back Devin Singletary, who is signing a three-year, $16.5 million to possibly replace Barkley with the New York Giants.

Houston was reportedly monitoring Derrick Henry's market, but ultimately decided on the Mixon trade as Henry was set to sign with the Baltimore Ravens.

Mixon was a 1,000-yard rusher for Cincinnati in four of his seven seasons there, including 2023. He was selected to the Pro Bowl in 2021, when he rushed for a career-high 1,205 yards, 13 touchdowns and the Bengals went to the Super Bowl.
