It was a tough night for the Padres Thursday night as they lost in the series opener to the Cincinnati Reds by a score of 4-1. Despite outhitting the Reds 6-5, the Padres unfortunately just could not get the hits to fall when they needed them the most. Perhaps the ultimate example of the Friars hard luck at the plate Thursday night came in the bottom of the 6th inning when Manny Machado laced a double down the left field line that would have plated two runs and brought San Diego to within one, had it not bounced over the fence and sent Fernando Tatis Jr. back to third base. Padre right hander Chris Paddack battled to keep the Padres in the game but his night came to an end after six innings in which he allowed 3 earned runs off of home runs from Joey Votto and Tucker Barnhart.

As mentioned, Manny Machado delivered the only Padres run of the night on this double in the sixth that could have changed the complexion of the game had it not bounced up over the fence and off of the Western Metal Supply building:
