Being an official in any sport at any level is very difficult and always challenging. Everyone in the stands and watching on TV is an “expert” official and it’s easy to criticize!
In a football game with twenty people going every which way on every play, calls are going to be missed and we all know you could probably call holding on every play. Let’s get to the non-call in the NFC Championship game that more than likely cost the Saints a trip to Super Bowl LIII.
The NFL admitted after the game the call was blown. It should have been pass interference on Rams defensive back Nickell Robey - Coleman on Saints wideout Tommylee Lewis. It should have also been helmet to helmet contact. Saints head coach Sean Payton argued the very obvious call as he should. I have to say I would have caused more of a scene. Payton showed a tremendous amount of class in the postgame press conference stating that he had talked to Al Riveron, the Senior Vice President of officiating for the NFL, and Riveron admitted that they blew the call.
I would imagine we are in line for more replay challenges in the future.
