Manny Machado hit a two-run homer in the first inning, and Austin Hedges slammed a two-run shot in the second to help the San Diego Padres snap a six-game losing streak with a 5-3 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday night at Petco Park.
Machado and Hedges each hit their third home runs of the season off loser David Price, giving the Padres an early 4-1 lead. Joey Lucchesi (2-2) pitched six strong innings and combined with Craig Stammen and Kirby Yates to keep the Dodgers at bay. Yates allowed a run in the ninth but picked up his seventh save.
A.J. Pollock homered for the Dodgers, who rallied for a run in the ninth and had the tying runs on base with one out when Chris Taylor wrapped into a game-ending double play.
The Padres, meanwhile, banged out 11 hits. Every starter had a least one hit, with Brian Dozier and Fernando Tatis, Jr., each collecting a pair. Ty France drove in an insurance run for San Diego with an RBI single in the seventh.
