Machado’s Grand Slam in 9th Carries Padres Past Reds, 7-6

97.3 The Fan

Manny Machado hit a one-out grand slam off closer Raisel Iglesias in the top of the ninth inning on Sunday to lift the San Diego Padres to a 7-6 victory over the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ballpark. It was the second time in the past three games that the Padres beat the Reds with a four-run rally in the final inning.

Machado’s blast, his 11th of the year, was the sixth home run of the game – the long balls accounting for all 13 runs that were scored. Eugenio Suarez hit a two-run homer in the first for Cincinnati, Mike Moustakas hit a three-run homer in the sixth, and Aristides Aquino hit a solo home run in the eighth to put the Reds ahead, 6-3.

The Padres, earlier, had received home runs from Eric Hosmer, a solo shot, and Francisco Mejia a two-run blast. Then in the ninth, pinch-hitter Jurickson Profar doubled with one out off reliever Amir Garrett, and Trent Grisham walked. That brought in Iglesias, who had blown the save in Friday’s 5-2 San Diego comeback win.

Pinch-hitter Josh Naylor reached on an infield single to load the bases for Machado, whose long line drive carried deep into the grandstands in left field. The home run made a winner of reliever Michel Baez (1-0). Kirby Yates recorded his 15th-save in 15 chances.
