Manny Machado hit a two-run homer in the first inning for the second consecutive game, and Chris Paddack and the San Diego Padres made it stand up for their second-consecutive victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers, 6-3, Saturday afternoon at Petco Park.
Machado’s fourth home run of the year came off Ross Striplng and put the Padres ahead, 2-1. The Dodgers had scored in the top of the first on an RBI single by Max Muncy. Paddack wavered in the fourth, allowing back-to-back RBI doubles by Corey Seager and Will Smith to put Los Angeles ahead, 3-2.
But the Padres tied it on a bases-loaded walk to Jurickson Profar in the bottom of the fourth, and went ahead on Machado’s RBI double in fifth. Francisco Mejia added some insurance for San Diego with a two-run homer, his fifth of the season, in the eighth inning.
Paddack (2-3) last just five innings, but was backed up by four hitless innings of relief from the Padres’ bullpen. Matt Strahm threw two scoreless innings, and Luis Perdomo had a hitless eighth, setting up Kirby Yates for his eighth save of the season in a one-two-three ninth.
