Another Gem: Richards Tames Giants on Three Hits; Hedges Homers in 6-1 Win

He allowed a run, so his miniscule earned run average actually moved up a notch. But San Diego ace Garrett Richards continued his hot pitching Sunday afternoon, limiting San Francisco to three hits in a complete-game 6-1 victory at Petco Park.

Richards, now 3-0 after a no-decision in his first start this season, saw his ERA rise from 0.86 to 0.90. That, despite striking out 10, walking just one and allowing only back-to-back doubles for a run to the Giants’ Brandon Crawford and Steven Duggar in the third inning.

By then his battery-mate Austin Hedges had given him a 3-0 lead, hitting a two-run homer in the second inning, just moments after Trent Grisham’s RBI single. Hedges had two of the Padres’ season-high 11 hits. Fernando Tatis Jr. had three and added a pair of stolen bases.

San Diego improved to 8-8 with its second-straight victory. The Giants, who managed only three hits in each of the last two games of the weekend series, had only five base-runners the entire game and went down in order against Richards in seven of the nine innings.

Tommy Pham tacked on an RBI double for the Padres, Greg Garcia added an RBI hit, and Josh Naylor finished the scoring with a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning.
