Rookies Lead Rockies past Padres, 5-3, Gain Split of Opening Series

Young Right-hander Chi Chi Gonzalez pitched shutout ball into the eigth inning and rookie outfielder Sam Hilliard had three hits, including a homer and two RBI's, to lead the Colorado Rockies past the San Diego Padres, 5-3, on Sunday, earning a split of the teams' season-opening four-game series at Petco Park.

Hilliard went deep against Padre starter and loser Zach Davies (0-1) in the third inning to give Colorado a 1-0 lead, then singled in a tun to cap a three-run, fifth-inning uprising for the Rockies. Meanwhile Gonzalez allowed just two hits over seven innings, taking a 5-0 lead to the eigth. 


Francisco Mejia's two-run homer ruined Gonzalez's shutout bid, but Jairo Diaz and Scott Oberg, who picked up his second save, nailed down the final five outs for Colorado.
