Buck Showalter has brought a certain element of entertainment to his press conferences in his first year with the New York Mets and Sunday’s pre-game meeting with reporters led to quite the discussion about singer/songwriter Barry Manilow.
Showalter noticed some sort of discussion going on among reporters and, like a high school teacher, asked them if they’d like to share with the class.
Apparently, the conversation was about one reporter’s recent visit to a Barry Manilow show, leading to a fun exchange between Showalter and the room.
Perhaps the highlight was when Showalter inquired about Barry Manilow’s age.
“Barry Manilow’s 80 years old?” a flabbergasted Showalter said. “Come on, man.”
Technically, Manilow just turned 79 in June, but it is still an impressive age to be out there and still performing. Maybe it made the 66-year-old Showalter feel old himself.
Either way, it made for a unique moment as the Mets prepared for their Sunday afternoon game against the Braves as they looked to take four of five from their NL East rival and build on their lead.
