If you arrived early to Truist Park—site of Thursday night’s series finale between the division-leading Braves and their NL East rival, the visiting Philadelphia Phillies—you may have watched a chaotic scene unfold in the 300 level, where a stadium employee corralled an interloping cat discovered between a pair of concrete support beams. The rascal was at large for several tumultuous minutes, successfully dodging workers (including one balancing precariously on a ladder) before finally plopping into a nearby net.
The bizarre caper was reminiscent of a similar fiasco earlier this month when a stray cat caused a commotion at a University of Miami football game, desperately clinging to its perch atop Hard Rock Stadium before falling (and simultaneously urinating) several stories. The stakes in Miami were admittedly much higher, though luckily the thrill-seeking feline came away from the event unharmed, finding a soft landing in the form of an American flag.
Daring animal rescues aside, a win Thursday could clinch the Braves’ fourth consecutive NL East crown and they’re off to a good start, blanking the Phils through four innings. If the standings hold, Atlanta would face Milwaukee in the first round. The Braves split their season series with the Brew Crew (3-3), though fortunately for Atlanta, Milwaukee will be without last year’s NL Rookie of the Year Devin Williams (his “Airbender” changeup may be the single most dominant pitch in baseball), who injured his hand celebrating the Brewers’ division title.
