Players in the Champions League game between Paris Saint-German and Basaksehir took an unprecedented action on Tuesday when both teams walked off the field after an official allegedly used a racial slur toward as assistant coach of the Turkish squad.
Basakesehir assistant coach Pierre Webo, who is from Cameroon, was shown a red card by referee Ovidiu Hategan of Romania about 15 minutes into the scoreless match, which infuriated the players of the team who accused the fourth official, Sebastian Coltescu, also from Romania, of using a racist term toward the assistant coach.
Following discussions, players on both Basaksehir and PSG walked off the pitch at Parc des Princes and did not return to the game.
Basaksehir substitute Demba Ba was seen demanding the fourth official explain himself.
“You never say ‘this white guy’. You say ‘this guy.’ So why when you mention a Black guy, you say ‘this Black guy?’” he was heard saying to the official on the broadcast.
UEFA, European football’s governing body, said in a statement that the match has been temporarily suspended and that it would “thoroughly investigate the matter and further communication will be made in due course.”
Players from PSG , such as Kylian Mbappe echoed their support on social media.
The match is expected to resume in Wednesday.
