As an NFL quarterback, taking hits comes with the territory. Drew Lock learned that the hard way this weekend, catching a stray in this viral exchange between the US Open and a Twitter troll who dismissed tennis as “not a sport.”

While others may have taken it personally, the 25-year-old seemed to have a sense of humor about it, acknowledging the slight in a playful tweet wishing everyone—and especially the US Open intern who eviscerated him—a happy 4th of July.

Though an obvious downgrade from his predecessor Russell Wilson, it’s too early to close the book on Lock, who the Seahawks are hoping will develop into a productive NFL starter. Lock wouldn’t be the first late bloomer to benefit from a mid-career change of scenery—Ryan Tannehill has flourished in Tennessee, successfully shedding the bust label that followed him throughout his Dolphins tenure. Still, the early returns have not been good, leaving Lock, who produced as many turnovers (25) as touchdowns over this three-year stay in Denver, with little margin for error as he enters the next chapter of what has been a frustrating career to this point.

The US Open, for those interested, begins August 29th in Queens.
