Another day in 2020, another strange Joe West occurrence.
I literally just wrote a story yesterday about a call involving West -- one that he got 100 percent right, much to the chagrin of Phillies fans and John Kruk -- so you can see my long-winded recap of West's top moments of the year there.
On Thursday, it was not an announcer but a player, not a Phillie but a Met, who was furious with Joe West. And again, it wasn't really West's fault in this situation.
After taking a questionable strike call from home plate umpire Stu Scheurwater, Mets hitting phenom Jeff McNeil was clearly rubbed the wrong way. He had a brief interaction with Scheurwater during the at bat, but didn't make too much of a scene.
That is, he didn't make a scene until he had a chance to vent his frustration to West at second base.
Mets manager Luis Rojas commented on the strange verbal altercation after the game.
"Mac... I think he disagreed with one of the calls," Rojas said (via SNY). "He got a little emotional out there, you know. Mac gets heated up in games with his competitiveness, everything that he does.
"I went out there because I didn't know what was happening and then I found out it was that... just a little emotional time for disagreeing with a call."
It's not the first time that there has been some sort of weird Jeff McNeil-Joe West occurrence. I'm reminded of when McNeil hit a grounder against the Phillies that then-Mets speedster Rajai Davis attempted to score on, resulting in an all-too-awkward moment at home plate.
