Perhaps one of the most notable coaching hires of the NFL offseason didn't involve a head coaching vacancy at all.

The Washington Commanders made waves on Friday when reports surfaced that they had reached a deal to hire former Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy to the same position. Bieniemy will also serve as assistant head coach in Washington, a title he didn't have in Kansas City.

The move comes after yet another year in which Bieniemy was shut out in the league's head coaching carousel. That development was sealed when the Indianapolis Colts filled the final head coaching vacancy by hiring former Eagles offensive coordinator Shane Steichen.

Bieniemy's fate has been a topic of conservation for several years running. He has long been touted as a hot coaching candidate after leading one of the league's top offensive units since taking over as Chiefs offensive coordinator in 2018. The Chiefs reached the AFC title game in each of his five seasons as OC, a run that included three Super Bowl appearances and two wins in the big game. Chiefs superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes won two MVPs during that run, and has credited Bieniemy with aspects of his development.

On social media, Bieniemy's jump from the Chiefs to the Commanders seemed to renew discussion over his snub for head coaching jobs.
