The Padres selected Abrams, who is a high school shortstop out of Georgia, with the No. 6 overall pick on Monday. Earlier on Saturday, Padres signed their top pick, with a reported signing bonus of $5.2 million, which is slightly less than the allotted slot value of $5,742,900.
#Padres get one of the most athletic kids in the draft. Probably saw 50+ CJ Abrams plate appearances in the draft cycle. At least a 70-runner; good chance to stick at short; could be a premium defender in CF. Uses who field, contact-oriented approach. #FriarFaithful #MLBDraft pic.twitter.com/QIR17rIDOt
— Burke Granger (@burkegranger) June 4, 2019Abrams, who was originally committed to play collegiately at the University of Alabama, stands out as potentially the fastest player available among the 2019 draft class. He has a strong arm and a really good left-handed bat.

— Prep Baseball Report (@prepbaseball) June 3, 2019General manager AJ Preller said Abrams will begin his Minor League career at shortstop, but will most likely project as a center fielder long term due to the clubs depth at shortstop throughout their farm system.
