Padres sign their top pick Abrams

The San Diego Padres introduced their newly signed first round draft choice, CJ Abrams in Saturday.

The Padres selected Abrams, who is a high school shortstop out of Georgia, with the No. 6 overall pick on Monday. Earlier on Saturday, Padres signed their top pick, with a reported signing bonus of $5.2 million, which is slightly less than the allotted slot value of $5,742,900.

Abrams, who was originally committed to play collegiately at the University of Alabama, stands out as potentially the fastest player available among the 2019 draft class. He has a strong arm and a really good left-handed bat.

In his senior season, the 18 year-old hit .341 with three home runs and was the Georgia Gatorade Player of the Year. He is a hitter that knows the zone well as he has only struck out 12 times during his entire high school career.

General manager AJ Preller said Abrams will begin his Minor League career at shortstop, but will most likely project as a center fielder long term due to the clubs depth at shortstop throughout their farm system.
