The Padres lost to the Cubs 5-2 on Thursday, as the Friars dropped one game below .500 at 13-14. Manny Machado's solo homer in the 2nd inning gave the Padres an early 1-0 lead. Padres starter Seth Lugo was the recipient of some bad luck, as what should have been a called inning-ending strike 3 in the 2nd inning, was called a ball against Eric Hosmer, extending his at-bat. Hosmer would end up homering later in the at-bat, followed by another home run by Nelson Velazquez and a third run scoring that inning on an RBI-single from Tucker Barnhart. Ian Happ's RBI-single in the 5th and Dansby Swanson's solo homer in the 7th put the game out of reach, as the Padres ultimately lost 5-2. The Padres will have a much needed day off on Friday before playing a 2-game series against the Giants in Mexico City beginning on Saturday.
