Wednesday's game between the Yankees and Padres featured a tremendous pitcher's duel between Dylan Cease and Max Fried. Fried gave up just 1 run in 7 innings on a solo homer by Jackson Merrill in the 4th inning. Cease carried a no-hitter into the 7th inning, but gave up a solo homer to Cody Bellinger to break up his no-hit bid and tie the game at 1. Two batters later, Cease would exit the game in the middle of an at-bat with an apparent injury.

Jackson Merrill stepped to the plate in the 8th inning with runners on 1st and 2nd and a chance to put the Padres on top again, and came through with an RBI-single. Xander Bogaerts followed that up with a run-scoring sac-fly, giving the Padres a 3-1 lead. But Trent Grisham blasted a 2-run game-tying home run in the bottom of the 8th to even up the score.

After neither team scored in the 9th, the Padres loaded the bases with 2 outs in the top of the 10th, but Xander Bogaerts struck out to end the threat. After a sacrifice bunt moved the lead runner to 3rd base with 1 out, pinch-hitter J.C. Escarra hit a deep sac-fly to left field to bring in the winning run for the Yankees. The Padres will enjoy a day off on Thursday before facing the Rockies at Coors Field for the final series of this road trip.
