The Padres lost to the Diamondbacks 5-1 on Friday night. Stephen Kolek had a tough outing, surrendering 5 runs (4 earned) on 7 hits and 2 walks in just 4.1 innings. The Padres jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, when Fernando Tatis tagged up to advance to third base on a flyout to center field, and then came around to score on a throwing error. One of the pivotal moments in the game came in the 2nd inning with runners on the corners and one out. Elias Diaz struck out and Jake Cronenworth attempted to steal second, and Gabriel Moreno's throw went into the outfield, allowing Gavin Sheets to score the Padres' second run. But upon further review, Moreno's hand hit the umpire's facemask, affecting his throw, and umpire's interference was called, sending both runners back to first and third and taking a run off the board. Tyler Wade then flew out to end the inning.

Josh Naylor tied the game with a solo homer in the bottom of the 2nd. Another important moment came in the bottom of the 3rd inning, when Corbin Carroll struck out with 2 away, but reached base when the ball got past Elias Diaz, thereby extending the inning. Carroll would end up scoring two batters later on Geraldo Perdomo's RBI-single, and Arizona was never threatened after that. They tacked on three more runs in the 5th, but the Padres didn't get a single hit after the 5th. Ryan Bergert will start for the Padres on Saturday.
