The Padres beat the Nationals 12-4 in a game that featured an offensive explosion from the Padres. Jackson Merrill reached base four times, finishing a home run shy of the cycle. Xander Bogaerts had four singles plus drew a walk to reach base five times. Plus, Jurickson Profar and Kyle Higashioka blasted home runs to give the Padres a huge early cushion. Matt Waldron had a shaky first inning, 3 earned runs on 4 hits, to dig the Padres into a 3-0 hole. But the Padres immediately responded with 4 runs in the top of the 2nd inning, and never looked back, as Waldron rebounded to throw 5 more hitless and scoreless innings, allowing the Padres to use some of their low leverage relievers to finish out the game. The Padres secured the series win, and will have a chance to sweep the Nationals on Thursday morning.
