The Padres lost to the Reds by a score of 7-5, extending their losing streak to 6 games. The Friars wasted a strong pitching performance from Seth Lugo, who allowed just one unearned run in six innings, to go along with six strikeouts and no walks. Trent Grisham put the Padres on top 1-0 with a solo blast in the top of the 6th inning. But Grisham was charged with an error on what would have been an inning-ending flyout that allowed Elly De La Cruz to make it to second base, and then score on a single by Jake Fraley to tie the game. Brent Honeywell then gave up a solo home run to Tyler Stephenson, giving the Reds a 2-1 lead. Gary Sanchez would tie the game in the top of the 9th with a sacrifice flyout.

After Josh Hader pitched a scoreless 9th to send the game to extra innings, the Padres scored two runs on an RBI-single from Fernando Tatis followed by an RBI-double by Juan Soto. With Hader apparently unable to pitch a second inning, Ray Kerr pitched the bottom of the 10th, and after recording the first two outs of the inning, he gave up a 2-run game-tying home run to Matt McLain, sending the game to the 11th.

Gary Sanchez put the Friars back on top with an RBI-single in the top of the 11th, giving the Padres yet another opportunity to win the game. Drew Carlton was summoned to pitch the bottom of the 11th, and gave up an RBI-double to Elly De La Cruz, the first batter he faced, to tie the game. After De La Cruz advanced to third on a sacrifice, he was thrown out on a bang bang play at the plate to save the game-winning run. But only momentarily, as the very next batter Spencer Steer hit a walk-off 2-run home run. Game 2 between the Padres and Reds will be at 10:40 am on Saturday morning.
