The Padres and Dodgers played an entertaining, back and forth game on Monday night to begin their series at Petco Park, with the Dodgers holding on for an 8-7 win in 10 innings. Both teams scored 2 runs in the 1st inning, and then the Padres took the lead in the 2nd when Jake Cronenworth scored after Will Smith's throwing error trying to throw Fernando Tatis Jr. out stealing second base. After a run-scoring sac-fly from Teoscar Hernandez in the 3rd inning, Smith made up for his throwing error with a 2-run homer to put the Dodgers back on top 5-3. The Padres scored 3 runs of their own in the bottom half of the frame on a bases loaded 3-run triple by Tyler Wade. Hyeseong Kim then tied the game at 6-6 with an RBI-double in the 5th inning.
There were plenty of tense moments after the score was tied at 6, but both bullpens did their jobs, sending the game into extra innings. Andy Pages led off the inning with an RBI-double off of Wandy Peralta. Then Tommy Edman hit a ball back up the middle that bounced off of second base and ricocheted into right field to bring Pages home. The bottom of the 10th inning featured plenty of drama, beginning with Manny Machado to begin the inning. After working a full count, Machado was called out looking at what certainly appeared to be ball four. Machado voiced his frustration to the home plate umpire, but ultimately had to take a seat on the bench. Jackson Merrill then ripped an RBI-double to make it an 8-7 game with 1 out, leaving fans to imagine a scenario with runners on 2nd and 3rd and no outs if Machado had been granted ball four. Gavin Sheets then popped out to third base and Xander Bogaerts flew out to center field to end the game. Dylan Cease will start for the Padres on Tuesday evening.
