The Padres lost Game 2 to the Mets 7-3 in a game that could have ended the Mets' season. Francisco Lindor's 1st inning solo home run put the Mets up early, but Trent Grisham responded with a solo homer of his own in the 3rd inning, his second home run in as many games in this Wild Card series. Brandon Nimmo's RBI-single in the 4th gave the Mets a 2-1 lead, but Jurickson Profar answered right back with an RBI-single of his own in the 5th inning to tie the game. Blake Snell battled with his control all night, allowing 4 hits and walking 6 in just 3.1 innings pitched. He was lifted in the 4th inning with two runners on, and Nick Martinez was able to get out of the jam unscathed. But Martinez gave up a solo homer to Pete Alonso in the 5th inning, giving the Mets a 3-2 lead.

The biggest decision of the game came in the 7th inning, when Buck Showalter brought All-Star closer Edwin Diaz in to protect a 1-run lead with 9 outs remaining in the game. Diaz did what he always does and recorded a scoreless inning. But the wheels came off for the Padres in the bottom of the 7th inning, as the Mets broke the game wide open, scoring 4 runs. After an extremely long layoff, Showalter decided to bring Diaz back out despite a 5-run lead, in a move that could impact Diaz's performance in a winner-take-all Game 3 on Sunday, as the Mets were able to hold on for the 7-3 win.

Bob Melvin discussed Blake Snell's outing, the Padres' offense, Adrian Morejon's relief appearance, and more following the Padres' loss in Game 2 of the Wild Card Series:
