The Padres lost to the Pirates 3-2 on Wednesday, dropping the series 2 games to 1 and extending their frustrations against Pittsburgh, who has won 5 of 6 games against the Padres this season. Seth Lugo allowed just 2 solo home runs over 7 innings while striking out 8, but the Padres offense couldn't get anything going. With the Padres trailing 3-1 in the bottom of the 9th, Jake Cronenworth was hit by a pitch with men on 1st and 2nd to load the bases with just one out. Juan Soto, who had been given the day off because of his lingering finger injury, was summoned to pinch hit for Gary Sanchez, and promptly drew a 4-pitch walk, making it a one-run game. Taylor Kohlwey followed and popped out to third base in foul territory, bringing Trent Grisham to the plate with the game on the line. Grisham unfortunately struck out with the bases still loaded to end the game, as the Padres will use Thursday's off-day to regroup before a 3-game series against the Rangers.
