The Padres came from behind to beat the Diamondbacks 3-2 on Wednesday night, and earn a series win against a divisional opponent in the process. Things got off to a rocky start in Nestor Cortes' debut, as he gave up a solo homer to Corbin Carroll in the 1st inning and then loaded the bases with no outs in the 2nd inning, including hitting two batters, but escaped with only one run coming in to score.
The Padres' first real chance to score came with 2 outs and runners on the corners in the 5th inning. Jose Iglesias attempted to steal second base and Adrian Del Castillo threw down to second, but Gerardo Perdomo cut off the throw and threw out Jake Cronenworth trying to score, ending the inning. Xander Bogaerts cut the deficit in half with a solo homer in the 7th inning. With the Padres down to their final three outs and trailing by one, Ryan O'Hearn hit a game-tying solo homer in the 9th inning. Xander Bogaerts followed that up with a double in the left-center gap, and advanced to third on a sac-bunt from Cronenworth. Jose Iglesias played the hero once again, hitting an opposite-field single to bring in the go-ahead run. Mason Miller locked down his first save with the Padres, with Robert Suarez likely unavailable after pitching 1.2 innings the previous night. The Padres will enjoy a day off on Thursday before welcoming the Boston Red Sox to Petco.
