The Padres suffered a heart-breaking loss for the second day in a row on Sunday. Following Saturday's late blown lead that saw Luis Rengifo suffer an injury, the Padres failed to close things out and protect a late lead once again. Robbie Ray pitched well, delivering a quality start with just one earned run in six innings. Xander Bogaerts drove in two runs with a hard-hit single in the 4th inning, and Sung-Mun Song delivered an insurance run on a deep sac-fly in the 7th inning. With Mason Miller in to close things out with a 2-run lead in the bottom of the 9th, he gave up a leadoff single to Junior Caminero before retiring the next two batters he faced. With a runner on and two outs, Jonny DeLuca hit a deep fly ball to left that Samad Taylor appeared to catch for what would have been the final out of the game. But after crashing into the wall with his glove in the air, he dropped the ball over the fence, turning the final out into a game-tying two-run home run.
Things didn't go smoothly for the Padres in the top of the 10th inning. Jake Cronenworth popped out on a sac-bunt attempt for the second time in the past week for the first out of the inning. Jase Bowen was then thrown out attempting to steal third base, as the Rays got out of the inning without surrendering a run. Yuki Matsui struck out two in a scoreless bottom of the inning to send the game to the 11th inning. After Manny Machado advanced to third base on a wild pitch, he scored on a deep sac-fly from Ty France to put the Padres back on top. They ran into trouble in the bottom of the 11th however. After Caminero struck out to begin the inning, Liam Hicks singled to center, putting runners at the corners with one out and the Rays trailing by a run. After a pinch-runner stole second base, the Padres opted to intentionally walk Chandler Simpson to load the bases with one out and a one-run lead. DeLuca would hit a soft grounder to shortstop that Xander Bogaerts charged, but couldn't handle, and was unable to record an out. Bogaerts was charged with an error on the play, leaving the bases loaded with just one out. Jorge Mateo then roped a line drive over Samad Taylor's head in left field to walk it off and complete the sweep for the Rays. The Padres now travel to Cincinnati to face the Reds.
